(Lauraceae)
Lindera praecox southern form BSWJ11125
Description
Initially we were puzzled by this form of the species from Fukuoka as it differed so much from what we had gathered in the north of Japan in the autumn of 2005. An exquisite deciduous shrub which smothers the bare branches in a mass of small yellow unisexual flowers in spring. The elegant small glossy green foliage is thick textured and elliptic to narrowly ovate in this form, transforming to one of the best autumnal deep-yellows available bearing large green rounded fruits on the female plants. Best grown in sun to part shade in a freely drained acid-neutral soil with some moisture retention.
